About HealthLumen
HealthLumen’s www.healthlumen.com mission is to improve health outcomes by applying leading edge microsimulation-based modelling to quantify the future impact of interventions on chronic and rare diseases when scaled across the population. Such interventions include policy, prevention, screening, and treatment interventions, with a focus on predicting the impact of health behaviours on the future burden of over 20 noncommunicable diseases and related costs, across 80 countries.
HealthLumen works in both the public sector and also in the private sector, with global corporations in pharmaceutical, life sciences and insurance, where the value proposition can be applied in many areas. Our modelling provides actionable insights, and generates evidence, to support organisations with making key decisions in the lifecycle of a product or service, and with supporting the case for policy change.
We are now recruiting for a Data Scientist to join our growing team, working at the intersection of data science, epidemiology and software development across our disease modelling and analytical applications.
Primary responsibilities
- Develop R tools to automate HealthLumen’s data manipulation processes
- Follow R best practices
- Work between engineering and operations teams to translate disease model requirements into engineering specifications
- Develop infographic tools that provide user-friendly ways of displaying model outputs
- Research using established methods and techniques as directed
- Communicate regularly with your line manager and team regarding your progress
- Work with stakeholders to ensure to understand analysis and outputs needs being the link between user need and technical development.
- Work closely with colleagues to deliver HealthLumen’s strategy and new software platform
- Contribute research findings to written reports and publications
- Supporting new business development via providing inputs to proposals and meeting attendance, when required
- Additional tasks commensurate with your skillset
Key skills
- Expert knowledge of programming languages such as R, Python
- Excellent analytical skills
- Understanding of epidemiology and genetic epidemiology
- Understanding, and ability to use, a range of research methods
- Data cleaning, management and manipulation skills
- Knowledge and use of infographic software
- Knowledge of public health areas
- Understanding of statistical methods
- Stakeholder management
- Use of Microsoft office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Desirable skills
- Understanding of epidemiological methods
- Managerial experience
- Knowledge of C++ coding
Qualifications and experience
- MSc/PhD in data science or related field

This is a primarily remote role, with access to our London office on a rota basis. Candidates should be within reasonable commuting distance of London and able to attend 1–2 in-person meetings per month.
